Sportsmen get their day in Albany next month

Commentary by Dave Henderson

Spokesmen for anti-gun and anti-hunting factions are typically well-educated,well-spoken, well-dressed public relations professionals speaking at awell-organized press conference.A spokesmen for shooters or hunters is typically some poor guy on his day offcoming out of the woods when a microphone is thrust in his face. The anti-gun, anti-hunting element in this society is united, well financed andfocused.

We, on the other hand, are divided into many factions with differingagendas.Well, New York hunters and gun owners finally have a united front steppingforward for them in Albany --thanks largely to the very politicians who form andpass judgment on legislation. While the Assembly's Republican minority may not be the most influential factionin Albany, it has our backs, so to speak.

It is sponsoring a Sportsmen andOutdoor Recreation Legislative Awareness Day in Albany on Jan. 12.No less than Wayne LaPierre, the Executive Vice President of the NRA, will bethe guest speaker, as will be Safari Club International President Dr. LarryRudolph and other notables. The lobby of the Legislative Office Building willcontain displays.

Now the Republicans need our support. We need to show up in impressive numbersto make other legislators take notice.SCOPE (Shooters Committee for Political Education), the state's most activepro-gun group, is arranging for bus transportation to and from the event withpickup locations from Buffalo to Syracuse and eventually other venues.Departure times will be very early in the morning of the event with return tothe pickup location in the early evening. The bus ride will be $25 per person.Reservations are required.

For reservations and other information call SCOPE President Ken Mathison at(585) 663-8741 or e-mail info@SCOPEny.org
