In the Races

Republican John Degnan received the backing of Democratic Party leaders in the northern Westchester town of Somers. The Putnam County Democratic committee also recently endorsed Degnan to unseat Republican Assemblyman Greg Ball, who is backed by the Westchester Republicans. Ball and Degnan split the support of the Pawling Republicans in Dutchess County. The 99th Assembly District includes parts of Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess counties.

Terry O’Neill was supported by Albany Republicans to challenge Democratic Assemblyman Jack McEneny in the 104th Assembly District, which includes parts of the City of Albany and several surrounding towns. McEneny has served in the Assembly since 1992. Attorney Terry O’Neill has lived in the City of Albany for 30 years and has worked for the Legislature and the State Division of Criminal Justice Services. Community crime prevention will be the central to O’Neill campaign message.

City of Elmira Mayor John Tonella (D) announced that he will challenge Republican state Senator George Winner for the 53rd Senate seat. Winner was elected to the Senate in 2004 after serving 13 terms in the Assembly. The district includes Chemung, Steuben, Schuyler and Yates counties and parts of Tompkins County including the city and town of Ithaca.

The Working Families Party has endorsed North Country Senator Darrel J. Aubertine (D-Cape Vincent) and Assemblywoman Dierdre K. Scozzafava (R-Gouverneur). Senator Aubertine will face Republican David Renzi, who serves as the attorney for the Jefferson-Lewis Board of REALTORS. Assemblywoman Scozzafava is currently unopposed.
